Dean of Freshmen Fred Siegel made a stop at Hensley Hall Monday night as part of the Dean of Freshmen House Tour, which began at the start of the semester. About half of the Hensley residents shared their thoughts and concerns with the Dean over pizza he provided.

“On all our tours most of the students feel that advising and scheduling were the biggest problems,” said Meredith Waters  ‘13, one of the three Student Association Freshmen Senators who has been to all of the house tours with Siegel. “Many feel that advising is not helpful and that it is difficult to get classes they want.”

To address that concern, Siegel explained that students have two months after registration before classes start. They should check regularly to see if others drop classes.

“Registration is a process,” he advised. “Don’t make it just one day.”

Most of the Hensley residents that turned up for the event expressed a desire for more time between move-in and first day of class. According to Siegel, most of the students from his previous house tours share the same sentiment. The students explain that they need the extra time to get to know the campus more and to find out where their classes are located.

Siegel also shared his views on the class of 2013, noting that this year’s freshmen class is very active and engaging compared to previous freshmen classes.

“The freshmen class set the tone for public service,” he said, citing the large turnout at the first Freshman Day of Service in September. “I hope the class of ’13 become role models for future freshmen classes.”

Dean Siegel also congratulated the residents of Hensley Hall for placing first among freshmen dorms for the University-wide Eco-Challenge. Hensley placed third out of all the dorms for the challenge.

“We are a small dorm so it’s easier for us,” said Aaron Schmitt ’13, explaining the secret behind their achievement. “If enough light is coming through the windows, I turn off my lights.”

At the end, Siegel handed out free copies of By George! Mr. Washingtion’s Guide to Civility Today which contains George Washington’s rules for decent behavior. Siegel said he hopes the book become a symbol on how the class of ’13 can build a stronger community.

“It was nice to see Dean Siegel and to be able to talk freely with him,” remarked Aliya Karim ’13, as many of her housemates agreed.
