Anyone looking for a professional-grade experience in campus journalism can easily find a place at The Daily Colonial. We are the university's only complete, daily source for local news, and have received both praise and formal recognition from the most important people - our readers.
The Daily Colonial has an educational atmosphere, with a lot of time for learning. Our goal is not to drive people endlessly - we just want to make people better journalists. Everyone is a member of the team, from freshmen with no journalism experience to seniors with years of field work under their belts. We are here to put out a good publication and to learn, and we never forget that.
In addition, working at The Daily Colonial is not only a good way to get involved
on campus and a great way to have some fun, but is also a useful resume-building
activity. Journalism (and most fields) are moving more and more towards the internet, and publications such as The Daily Colonial are at
the front of pack, changing early to meet the new demands of both the readership
and the industry as a whole.
Open positions, their requirements and descriptions are listed below. Applications are at the bottom of the page.
Specialty positions
These are positions that are unique or very limited in number. They require special skills, and are especially good introductions to The Daily Colonial. All of these positions are unique, setting the holder apart from general applicants. Those that have held similar positions in the past have moved on to senior writing positions and senior seats on the Editorial Board.
| Staff Cartoonist | | The Daily Colonial is looking for a student with cartooning skills to help illustrate editorial pieces and other articles. The cartoonist will work closely with both the Art Director and the Opinion and Managing Editors.
If interested, there is also the potential for a regular cartoon feature or series of the artist’s creation and direction.

| Crime Reporter | | Crime reporters are placed directly on the crime beat in shifts. During a reporter's shift, he or she is responsible for monitoring and responding to any crime news that may break. In addition to this, more in-depth stories analyzing crime events and trends will be required on an as-needed basis.
This position reports directly to the Campus News Editor. The position provides significant reporting experience and provides an opportunity for rapid advancement through the organization. Serving as a crime reporter can provide the credentials necessary to apply for positions on the Editorial Board.

Staff Positions
Staff positions are the starting point for most Daily Colonial writers and reporters. These positions vary depending on the department, but generally entail assignment reporting with opportunities to move into higher positions in beat reporting and on the Editorial Board.
| Daily News Reporter | | Daily News reporters cover all breaking and investigative stories both on campus
and, to the extent they effect GW, in the Washington metropolitan area. Two
stories a week are expected. Topics are generally assigned, but the department
is open to reporter-generated story ideas. Focus is on immediately important
events and developments in the community. The starting level is standard "Reporter,"
with promotion opportunities to "Staff Writer" and "Senior Staff
Writer," based on performance. Prior experience is useful, but not required.

| Enterprise Reporter |
| Enterprise reporters cover in-depth stories both on campus and, to the extent they affect GW, in the Washington metropolitan area. One story a week is expected. Topics are generally assigned, but the department is open to reporter-generated story ideas. The focus is on providing in-depth, rich stories on trends, the reasons behind the “breaking news” headlines, and complex news issues. The starting level is standard "Reporter," with promotion opportunities to "Staff Writer" and "Senior Staff Writer," based on performance. Prior experience is useful, but not required. Training provided upon request. |

| Style Reporter |
| Style reporters have a chance to be part of the most experimental and free-form department of The Daily Colonial. Coverage areas include fashion, trends and the local club scene. Special projects are a frequent assignment. New ideas are encouraged and rewarded. The starting level is standard "Reporter," with promotion opportunities to "Staff Writer" and "Senior Staff Writer," based on performance. Prior experience is useful, but not required. Training provided upon request. |

| Arts Reporter |
| Arts reporters report on campus and city arts, including festivals, events at the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian, and major campus events such as Colonials Weekend, Fall Fest and Spring Fling. The starting level is standard "Reporter," with promotion opportunities to "Staff Writer" and "Senior Staff Writer," based on performance. Prior experience is useful, but not required. Training provided upon request. |

| Photographer |
| Photographers provide art for all sections. Work is done digitally. No camera is required, though we ask that if you do have a reasonably good digital camera, you use that, as staff equipment is limited. Basic photography experience is useful, but training can be provided. |

Business positions
| Marketing Assistant | | Marketing assistants will help coordinate and execute advertising campaigns, design innovative, eye-catching artwork for use in Daily Colonial advertising, and manage publicity issues for the publication. Marketing assistants report directly to the Business Manager. This position is especially beneficial to Business, Design, and PR majors. One assistant that excels during the 2005-2006 academic year will have to opportunity to assume the role of Business Manager, with a voice on the Editorial Board. | Web Designer | | The Daily Colonial is looking for web designers to assist in the design of the new interior sections of www.dailycolonial.com. Web Designers will be responsible for designing, coding and implementing the section front pages. An option of how many and which sections the designer wants to be responsible for will determine deadlines – some sections, such as Style, run once a week, while sections like Opinion will require daily work. This position reports directly to the General Manager, with close contact with the editors of the sections the designer is responsible for.
Editing will be in XHTML only, without dynamic coding, through The Daily Colonial’s editorial system. Knowledge and use of programs such as Dreamweaver is encouraged.
