Expectations of GW Upon Taking Office
What The Job Means to Him
"I kind of revel in the variety of activities that go on at a university like this," says Knapp. The ability to help fulfill a wide range of goals makes the job personally gratifying.
Moving to Campus
Before coming to GW, Knapp most recently served as provost of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Though he visited JHS's Washington campus many times he says living in the city is a quite different experience. He also says he is eager to move to the heart of campus next year once renovations to the President's Residence are complete.
Building Community
Knapp acknowledges the challenge of keeping students connected to campus when there are so many attractions in the city, and praises some existing student initiatives celebrating community.
What Do You Eat at J Street?
Wendy's or Chick-fil-a?
Continuing SJT's Legacy?
Knapp says he thinks it is a matter of building on the achievements of his presidential predecessors.
GW's Role in Strengthening Washington
JHU built a reputation as a strong research institution during Knapp's time with the school. He says that by becoming a stronger research facility, GW will enhance the city as a whole.
"No Shortage of Challenges..."
Knapp talks about things that didn't go according to plan this year - the Muslim flier controversy and the swastika-hoax. He then discusses a slew of large goals the university will face in the years ahead.
Knapp's Summer Plans
"Strictly Yarn, No Lambchops"
Knapp's fantastic sheep - on his Maryland farm - include two from George Washington's Mount Vernon estate that are of the breed the first President raised. The flock produces yarn that is locally sold.
Final Thoughts
A final look back on his first year in office, and a special message to Daily Colonial readers.
